You can stand up in the middle of the sea here. That is the whole trip.
Which boat reaches Stingray City before the ships do, what a private charter really costs, and where the water still glows after dark. Every trip on the island, reviewed.
The sandbar, the caves, the glow and one whole boat.
Four bookings a first week on Grand Cayman is usually built around. What each costs, and what the people who went say about it.
01The morning everyone comes forStingray City Experience Plus Two Snorkeling Stops on Grand CaymanThe sandbar plus two snorkel stops, back before lunch. Take the first departure and you get the rays without three tenders behind you.
02The night oneNight Bioluminescence Snorkel TourOut into the North Sound once it is properly dark, and the water lights up where your hands go. Book it around a new moon.
03The one that is not wetCayman Crystal Caves Tour in Grand CaymanStalactites, a cave lake and a boardwalk under North Side. The plan for the day the wind ruins the boats.
04The whole boatPrivate, luxury, custom charters to Stingray City, Snorkeling & MoreA charter with a captain who runs your day: sandbar first, then a reef and a beach nobody else stops at.
Every boat on Grand Cayman ends up at the same sandbar. Pick how you get there.
Twelve square miles of shallow sound, one bar of white sand in the middle of it, and about forty ways to be standing on it by ten in the morning. The difference is the stops either side and how many people are on the boat.
Six days out, from the sandbar to the caves under North Side.
One island, and it splits cleanly: the sound in the middle, six miles of sand down the west, a quiet north shore around Rum Point, blowholes and ironshore at the east end, and a limestone cave system in behind all of it.
The trips Grand Cayman books before anything else.

In Cayman the day is decided by the boat you are standing on.
A shared thirty-footer out of Camana Bay is a different day from a catamaran with a swim ladder and a cooler, and both are a different day again from chartering the hull outright. Charter prices are for the boat, not the seat.

The North Sound lights up on the black nights.
Dinoflagellates in the shallows off the north shore flash blue when the water moves, so every kick and handful throws sparks. It is a moon-dependent thing: the darker the night, the better it reads, and a full moon washes the whole show out.

What a day out on Grand Cayman actually costs.
This is not a cheap island, and the prices below are the honest spread. Shared boats and tickets at the bottom, the sandbar-plus-snorkel standards through the middle, whole boats and private captains at the top.
Three things that happen on Grand Cayman and nowhere much else.
Warm shallow water and a beach bar are the Caribbean everywhere. A wild ray leaning into your hands, a shelf of cushion stars in ankle-deep water, and a cave lake under a dry limestone bluff are not.

The Crystal Caves
Grand Cayman is a limestone bank pushed up out of deep water, and rain has been cutting into it for a very long time. Three of the caves under the North Side bluff are open on a boardwalk, one of them holding a still lake that reflects the whole ceiling back at you. It runs in guided groups, it is cool underground, and it is the one thing here that does not care what the sea is doing.

Starfish Point
A shallow point off Cayman Kai where cushion sea stars sit on the sand in a foot or two of water, close enough to the surface to read the pattern on them. Every captain says the same thing before you get in: look, do not lift. Out of the water a starfish suffocates, so the ones you see standing on somebody's palm in a photograph are having a very bad afternoon. Morning light is the good light here, and the same boats usually pair it with the sandbar.

The Stingray City sandbar
A mile or so off the north shore the sound shallows onto a bar of white sand you can stand on with your shoulders out of the water, and the southern rays come to it in numbers. The habit is old: fishing boats used the lee of the bar to clean conch and catch on the way in, and the rays learned the sound of an engine long before anybody sold a ticket for it. They are wild animals in open water, which is why every captain runs the same briefing — shuffle your feet, keep your hands flat, and do not lift one for a photograph.

Nor'westers blow the sound out. Have a dry plan for Grand Cayman.
A few times a winter the wind swings round and the North Sound turns to chop, and the sandbar boats simply do not run. Nothing is wasted if you have the inland day ready: the caves under North Side, the distillery in George Town, the old house at Pedro St James, or the east-end road on two wheels once it blows through.

The bookings Grand Cayman makes you plan around.
Most of this island can be arranged over breakfast. These four run on somebody else's calendar — the cruise schedule, the moon, the size of the boat and the weather — and turning up hopeful does not work on any of them.
- 01Stingray City Experience Plus Two Snorkeling Stops on Grand CaymanEvery boat on the island runs to the same sandbar, and they all bunch up when the ships are in port. The early departures are the quiet ones, and they go first.
- 02Night Bioluminescence Snorkel TourThe glow reads best on a dark night, so the new-moon weeks book out and a bright moon washes the trip out entirely. Pick the date before you pick the operator.
- 03Cayman Crystal Caves Tour in Grand CaymanEntry is in timed guided groups on a fixed boardwalk route, so the caves take a set number of people a day whatever the weather does to the boats.
- 04Private, luxury, custom charters to Stingray City, Snorkeling & MoreA charter is the whole hull, so the constraint is the date rather than the seat count. Good captains in high season are spoken for weeks out.
